  The School of Applied Chemistry & Biological Technology

 

 

The School of Applied Chemistry and Biological Technology was established in January 2005. A secondary school of Shenzhen Polytechnic, it consists of eight specialties and three research centers. The specialties are: Fine Chemicals Manufacturing Technology, Chemical Analytical Technology, Polymer Material Processing Engineering, Food Biotechnology, Food Nutrition and Inspection, Pharmacy, Drug Management, Urban Landscape. The research centers are: the Center of Biology Application Engineering Technology; the Center of Landscape Planning & Designing and the Center of Food Safety Assessment & Research.

The School boasts an 86 strong team of young, energetic management and teaching staff. Among these are 44 professors and associate professors, 23 lecturers, 22 doctor's degree holders, 32 master's degree holders. Fifty-six teachers have industry as well as teaching experience. The School has established an Academic Supervision Committee with 90 expert members from related fields. Currently, the school has an enrollment of 1,620.

The School is devoted to fostering students' practical skills. It has set up a number of well-equipped laboratories and workshops, including the Basic Technology of Chemistry and Biology Lab, the Biotechnology Lab, the Landscape & Horticulture Lab, the Fine Chemicals & Materials Lab, the Purification and Testing Lab,the Shenzhen Fermentation Examination Key Lab and The Shenzhen Polymer Materials Modification & Processing Public Technology Service Platform. Spread over an area of 6,000m2, these labs and workshops are equipped with 2,788 units of experimental apparatus. The School also has cooperative associations with enterprises and companies in related industries, and has set up 145 off-campus practice bases.

The School has also undertaken nearly 157 grant-funded research programs, including China National Physical Science Fund programs, programs funded by Bureaus of Science and Technology of Guangdong Province and Shenzhen Municipality, as well as programs at other levels. These projects have yielded 34 technological exhibits in the China Hi-Tech Fair (CHTF) and have been recommended by the CHTF for online transaction.

The School has established long-term relationships with a number of overseas universities. It is also the council member of 7 trade associations in Shenzhen, and serves as the training and/or testing base for a number of them.

The School has graduated 2,439 students since its establishment and maintains an average employment rate above 97%. With their solid academic foundation, practical skills and sound professional ethics, graduates receive high recommendations from both employers and the community.

Urban Landscape

The major of Urban Landscape was established in 1995, which currently consists of 3 directions, Landscape Design, Landscape Construction and Ornamental Horticulture.

There are 14 teachers in the major, including 4 professors and 6 associate professors, 3 doctor degree holders among them. Most teachers have working experience in company. One teacher was awarded teaching “Gold Medal”. The major has established a Major Supervision Committee in which there are 30 experts in the related areas.

The major emphasizes training the students’ practical skills, which has set up 7 on-campus laboratories and 16 off-campus practice bases. On-campus laboratories include Landscape Planning & Design, Landscape Construction Model, Flora Design, Tissue Culture Lab, Plant Protection Lab, Plant Cultivation Lab and Tea Ceremony. Off-campus practice bases are established in some local landscape architecture and gardening companies, they provide suitable platforms for the skill training and practical working abilities for the students. Graduates are appreciated in the local related companies. Student’s pieces were awarded more 20 medals in different competitions.

The major has 3 research centers: Landscape Planning and Design, Garden Plants, and Urban Malicious Creatures Control, undertaken more than 35 government projects, and achieved remarkable achievements in the fields of landscape architecture, gardening, and plant pest prevention and control.

There are about 450 students in the major, 97% students were employed once they graduated that year.

Major Objective

Student will be developed on multiple aspects, such as moral training, intelligence developing, and physical education through their 3 years study in the college so that they will have quite good comprehensive ability and professional theories and skills for landscape design and construction job, and gardening job. The major roots 3 directions: landscape design (LD), landscape construction (LC) and Ornamental Horticulture (OH).

The major of Food Biotechnology was established in 1996 and dedicates itself to the education of students who will apply modern biological technology in the fields of functional food and Biotechnology & applying. There are six laboratories in campus for students’ practice, including laboratory of Biochemistry, Microbiology Technology, Fermentation Engineering Technology,  Genetic Engineering Biotechnology, Cell Culture Technology, bioseparation Technology, and doing well in the jobs like biological detection for Food Quality Control and Biological Products etc. The major has 26 Student Practice Base outside the campus such as Shenzhen Kingway Beer Ltd.

Functional food: all kinds of departments of food industry including produce, quality control and marketing. For example, technical operation and management, quality control for food processing, marketing design and administration, nutrition consultant and market analysis, after service of food products and functional foods.

Biotechnology and Application Orientation

The future job market for the graduate

Graduates are mainly engaged in the jobs such as biological detection, production & processing, technology management in production line, marketing and after-sale service of biological products, management & maintenance of laboratory and research work in the biotechnology and related enterprises & public institutions  including food departments, pharmaceuticals departments, green chemical departments, agriculture departments and hospitals and quarantine & inspection departments.

Main training items

It aims at cultivating application-oriented professionals with advanced technologies knowing well about the basic theories and skills of such modern biotechnology as molecular biology, genetic engineering, cell culture, fermentation and bioseparation, and doing well in the jobs like biological detection, manufacturing, quality management and distribution of products and auxiliary R & D.

Teaching programs on the latest specialized knowledge and the development trends according to the status of the development in the specialty, industry and market as well as guidance for employment to be provided in the 6th semester.

Pharmaceutical science

The direction of this major is to nourish highly-qualified professional personnel who shall be possessed with good professional ethics and development potentials, grasp the elementary theory of pharmacy, acquaint with basic technique in pharmacy and be capable of the profession in pharmaceutical and biological product, quality control and pharmaceutical trade.

Food Nutrition and Quality Testing

The specialty of food nutrition and quality testing was established in January 2006 inSchool of Applied Chemistry and Biological Technology, Shenzhen Polytechnic.  Now there are about 200 students studying the major courses. The school provides the advanced laboratories and strong team of young, energetic teaching staff, and the Center of Food Safety Assessment & Research.

The school offers courses in food nutrition and quality testing and is devoted to fostering students' practical skills. After graduate, the students will have the abilities to work in food quality monitor, food safety management and quality certification in food processing in government agencies, food companies, food testing agencies, customs and research institutions etc.. In addition to, as instrumental manager in Lab and nutritional meal advisor etc..

1 long term education cooperation: after graduate from China, our students may go to your university for further study to obtain BSc or master degree or doctoral degree, their experiments may be carried out partly in your university and partly in Shenzhen polytechnic. Your staff may come to Shenzhen Polytechnic to teach. We may co-set up the teaching plan for our students who are willing to further study in your University.
